In search of Dreghorn. A riot, Piccadilly and a Devil’s Chimney!

The route starts in Daisybank CP , climbs the old tramway incline to the foot of Dreghorn’s famous limestone rock formation. then it follows the track up past Deadman’s quarry and the Devil’s Chimney, then it goes up to the Hillfort across to the trig point.

Route description

The Daisybank Car Park is close to Tramway Cottage famously destroyed in the Leckhampton riots of 1902-6. The route climbs the steep incline, formerly a tram way, to Top Quarry known to the quarrymen as ‘Piccadilly’ because so many tramways met there. This is the location of the famous Dreghorn cross-section of the Jurassic Limestone outcrop. From here we climb past the Devil’s Chimney, up to the Dobunni tribe’s hillfort with spectacular views over the Vale of Severn. The rest is an amble along the paths and country road before returning to the car park.
