Stout footwear should be worn and waterproof clothing is advisable depending on weather conditions. The route is fairly level with an uphill section leaving Baunton.
❶Leave Market Square/Parish Church and turn right into the Abbey Grounds, follow the asphalt path and at split by main grounds take the left fork and continue on path to the Norman arch exit. Go through the arch and turn left, follow pavement to road junction in front of you and cross to the Jack Gardner Memorial Garden. Follow the green space with river on your left and at first road turn right. Using the traffic island cross the road, then left and right into Bowling Green Lane. Follow this road, then a track for 600m, to reach the cottages on your left (Drowners Cottages). Follow bridleway sign and fork right onto higher path.
❷Keep following the bridleway, through a metal gate (with wood on your left) along the higher route, through the second gate to a third gate and onto the lane. Turn left down the lane and after 50m turn right uphill at footpath sign before the fourth gate. Cross the stile and follow path through a small gate beside a garden and house to exit at large front gate onto The Whiteway. Turn left and with care keep on left hand edge to a road bridge over the bypass. Keep left and after the bridge look for the stile on the right hand side of the road and cross the stile and turn left onto farm track to stile on right hand side before Exhibition Barn.
❸Cross the stile and follow permissive field boundary path for about 1km to a track by woods. Turn right and follow the track through the woodland to a five bar wooden gate. Go through gate and turn left down the lane. Near the end of the lane turn right through the gap in the wall and follow path through woodland until you reach Burford Road. Turn right by electricity pole, follow pavement across entrance and exit junction of A417 and carry on to large road sign and turn right into woodland (allotments ahead). Turn left before allotments through roadside woodland (For an alternative route, turn right onto the lane and follow track through woodland.)
❹Follow the path and take a right turn by a forked yew tree, opposite the petrol station. Follow path through woodland to a gap in a collapsed wall to open fields, walk straight on and follow path towards trees. Follow track around cricket ground to a junction turn left and fork left at next junction, bear left. Then straight on through woods to the Abbey Way. Turn right to traffic lights and cross using pedestrian crossing, turn left and follow pavement to Norman Arch, where you turn right through the arch back into the Abbey Grounds. Follow the path until you exit at the Market Place.
