Navigation

From the village pump follow the sign to Court Barn along Church Street passing the 14th century Eight Bells Inn and the 17th century almshouses built by Sir Baptist Hicks, the Lord of the Manor. Stop to admire and visit the ‘wool church’ of St James and/or the Court Barn Museum.

Turn right along Station Road. In 300 metres turn right through a gate 1 beside a National Trust signpost. Note the ruins of Sir Baptist Hicks’ mansion house on the right. It was destroyed during the Civil War in 1645. Follow the path downhill, cross the footbridge and bear diagonally right across the field to the River Cam. The stone structure to the right is ‘Juliana’s Gate’, named after Baptist Hicks’ daughter 2.

Cross the river, turn sharp right and follow the river bank to the gate before a wooden fence. Go through the gate, cross the stream, through another gate to reach a lane beside the mill house. Turn right to reach Calf Lane, named after a 14th century wool merchant.

3 Turn right again to pass a crooked building known as ‘The Court’. At the road junction turn left to meet the High Street again. Follow the High Street to the left, passing numerous 17th and 18th century buildings. By the old market hall there is a new marker for the Cotswold Way. Continue along the street until you reach the Volunteer Inn at the end of the Lower High Street.

4 Cross the road and follow the ‘Cotswold Way’ signs. This long distance path runs from Chipping Campden to Bath – 102 miles away. Ascend Hoo Lane. The road soon becomes a bridleway.

5 At the top turn left along the road and in about 120 metres 6 turn left at the public footpath signposted Chipping Campden. Note the beautiful views over Chipping Campden. Follow the path downhill, passing through four gates to reach some stone houses.

Bear slightly left beyond the houses and take a footpath on the right to cross a small footbridge over a stream and follow the enclosed path to a road. Bear left across the road and turn right along another enclosed footpath.

Bear left at the end of the path to rejoin the Cotswold Way. Turn right to reach the Lower High Street again.
