Route description

  • We start across the Common, then soon follow an ancient track downhill to the Golden Valley. Crossing the railway and canal we then follow the canal eastwards passing ancient mills and modern industry, as well as a variety of wildlife. We stop at a café for drinks and a snack before continuing, then head steeply up an ancient track to the hamlet of Hyde. After this we follow level paths with good views over the valley to Minchinhampton Common. As we return to Rodborough Common we have great views toward Woodchester and Selsley. Near the end there are many excellent picnicking places for a late lunch.
  • Some stiles, which require agility, but can largely be avoided.
  • We need to cross the railway twice on level crossings and a busy road to cross on the Commons
  • We are not stopping for lunch, so stock up at the café stop or bring your own snack and drink, and bring a picnic for the end.
  • Please wear weather-appropriate footwear and clothing for walking
  • The day before a walk, please check to ensure it is still running – and for any exceptional weather forecasts / warnings
  • All walk leaders are appropriately trained and have basic first-aid skills
  • Assistance dogs (on short leads) are welcome
  • Guided walks with the Wardens are free, but we welcome donations to help us sustain our work across the Cotswolds National Landscape.
