A Spring and Two Commons

Our climb up to Cleeve Hill is rewarded with views across the valley to the Malverns, Cheltenham Racecourse and the Cotswold Hills stretching away to the south. Crossing the hill, we search out the source of the River Isbourne before turning for home, crossing Stockwell Common, joining a path down a valley to our starting point in Woodmancote.

Route description

We start by ascending through fields, passing Haymes, onto Cleeve Hill. Our efforts are rewarded with views across the valley to the Malverns, Cheltenham Racecourse and the Cotswold Hills stretching away to the south.

We continue our walk, joining the Cotswold Way for a short distance to reach the site of the old Racecourse, before heading to the quieter eastern side of the common where Winchcombe comes into view. On then to the source of the River Isbourne before again joining the Cotswold Way and passing the Golf Club.

We then take a path down to cross Stockwell Common and join a path down a valley to our starting point in Woodmancote.

Enjoy views from Cleeve Hill and hear a little of the history and management of the common.

The pub will be open for refreshments at the end of the walk

Please wear weather-appropriate footwear and clothing for walking. It will be cooler on the common so please bring an extra windproof layer of clothing.

  • Please bring drinks and snacks for mid morning and lunch breaks.
  • The day before a walk, please check to ensure it is still running – and for any exceptional weather forecasts / warnings
  • All walk leaders are appropriately trained and have basic first-aid skills
  • Assistance dogs (on short leads) are welcome
  • Guided walks with the Wardens are free, but we welcome donations to help us sustain our work across the Cotswolds National Landscape.
