Route description

From the ‘walker’s car park’ we have a brief visit to the historic town and churchyard of Painswick, the self declared “Queen of the Cotswolds”, and learn of it’s historic prosperity from the wool trade and the fast flowing Painswick stream powering mills in the olden days.
We will join the Cotswold Way as we go down and then climb up to Edge, which seems appropriate as we remember the 60th anniversary of the Cotswolds National Landscape being designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We soon pass a memorial to one of the instigators of the Cotswold Way and soon after that a stone marking its mid-point.
We make our way up to Edge Common whose unimproved grasslands harbour wild flowers and butterflies flourish, we should then get great views over the Painswick valley.

Bring drinks and a snack for a short break midway, and extra liquids if it is warm.

  • Please wear weather-appropriate footwear and clothing for walking
  • Please bring a drink, a snack, and sunscreen
  • The day before a walk, please check to ensure it is still running – and for any exceptional weather forecasts / warnings
  • All walk leaders are appropriately trained and have basic first-aid skills
  • Assistance dogs (on short leads) are welcome
  • Guided walks with the Wardens are free, but we welcome donations to help us sustain our work across the Cotswolds National Landscape.
