Route description

Meet at café at 10.00 am, walk starts 10.30 am.

A nice walk through Kingscote woods to Horsley and back via fields and scenic lanes. Kingscote is a small village but has a lot of history. There was a large Roman settlement there and a Roman road runs through the parish. The manor and estate (4000 acre) are mentioned in the Domesday Book, and until 1960, was owned by the Kingscote family. John Wedgwood, son of Josiah of pottery fame and founder of the Royal Horticultural Society lived there. Jenner, the pioneer of vaccination, married one of the Kingscote family’s daughters in the village church.  Another daughter married Alan Cornwall, who was vicar of the neighbouring parish of Bagpath, and a colleague of Wilberforce in the fight against slavery.
