Route description

The first of what are planned to be bi-monthly Saturday walks from the village.

This is the first part of a figure of eight walk around Marshfield. The first ‘scoop’ is a circular walk using the Cotswold Gateway – Marshfield 2, a moderate 4.5 miles route. The second ‘scoop’ starts at 1.00pm. The routes can be walked as an all-day event or separately.

From the village war memorial the walk follows the High Street (providing the opportunity to look at the different house styles) to the 17th century Almshouses before turning south onto a green lane and steeply down into a small valley. On continuing there are occasional views to Cold Ashton, St. Catherine’s Valley and Charmy Down and, further on, wonderful views across to Claverton Down (the University of Bath), the Limpley Stoke Valley and the distant Mendips.

The route then passes West Lodge a gate house to Ashwicke Hall, before Marshfield village comes into view across open fields. After crossing a farmyard and the churchyard into the Market Place we return to our start point.

The second part of the walk starts at 1.00pm.
