Navigation

(1) Leave the upper tier of the car park by the passage in the far right hand corner. As you emerge into the churchyard follow the stepping stone path along the edge of the churchyard up to the main door of the church. Turn right through the churchyard and exit into St Mary’s. Carry straight ahead passing the Royal Oak.

(2) Turn right onto Vicarage Street and go down hill between rows of weavers cottages.

(3) At Dover House take a short diversion down the marked lane to enjoy the garden of the Quaker Meeting House.
Return to Vicarage Street and continue down to a fork in the road where you keep right.

(4) At the bottom of the hill the road crosses the Painswick stream with Lovedays Mill on the right. As the road bears to the left carry straight ahead and cross a stile into a field. Turn right and follow the field boundary behind the mill. Cross a second stile and carry on in the same direction following the course of the stream. At the corner of this field cross another stile onto a footpath and closely follow the bank of the stream until you reach a metalled road.

(5) Join a broad driveway opposite passing alongside the mill race for Brookhouse Mill. Keep to this path passing stables until a rough track joins it on the right. Take a short detour down this track to the millpond and entrance to Painswick Mill. Return to the original path and continue to your right. At the fork in the path bear right and, after 75 yards, enter the field on your right through the gate. There is no clearly defined footpath across this field but go straight ahead and, when you come to the brow of the rise in front of you, you will see a group of farm buildings. Head for the farm and exit the field at the far corner through a squeeze stile onto the farm drive. Go left to join a metalled road where you turn right.

(6) Opposite the entrance to Skinners mill, cross the stone stile onto the way marked footpath. Continue until you reach a kissing gate through which you enter a field. Follow the stream to the far side of the field where you pass through another kissing gate and over the footbridge over the mill race and sluice gates.

(7) Go through the gate and with the Tudor buildings of Kingsmill in front of you turn right to join Kingsmill Lane. Turn right and proceed along this lane until you reach a cross roads. Go straight across and continue until the road forks. Bear left onto Knapp Lane and go steeply uphill. Nearly at the top of the rise you will see Hale Lane on your left opposite Fig Tree Cottage. Go up this narrow lane which opens out into a wider road. At the top of the road the churchyard is immediately in front of you. Before entering the churchyard note the village stocks by the wall to the right of the gate.

From here you can return to the start or go across the churchyard to local bus stops.
