Guiting Power - Roel Circular: From preservation to lost villages - Walks with Stiles

These walks have been designed with some extra linking routes, enabling the option of exploring the Wardens and Windrush Ways as a series of 4 circular day walks. The series of maps can be used as a linear guide to the Windrush Way going east (start at circular walk 1) or the Wardens Way going west (start at circular walk 4).

Travel Info

Start at Guiting Power village green. Parking near green or follow signs on Church Road.

Navigation

Walk back to the green, cross to the Old Post Office and turn left. Go carefully around the corner and fork right onto a lane (Wardens Way) 1. Continue along the road which eventually becomes a track through woods, keeping the river on your right.

Follow the track up past farm buildings on your left, then turn R opposite a bungalow 2 along a track through a field. Follow this wide track through a field gate, over a crossroads and down towards the woods.

As the track enters the woods by a house bear left on a footpath before the house 3 go uphill through two gates and into the woods. Continue straight ahead ¾ mile (1.2km) along the track, ignoring any cross paths, and just before reaching large painted gates before a lane turn sharp left along another track (do not go through the gates). 4

Follow the track along the edge of the wood for ½ mile (0.8km ) to a crossing of paths. Turn right, a further ½ mile (0.8km) along the edge of the wood takes you to a painted gate by the road. Turn left along the road and in 100m turn right. 5

Leaving the Wardens Way here bear left along a bridleway, with the field boundary on your right, to a gate. Go through and continue with the wall on your left, through two field gates, past Roel Hill Farm and ahead along the drive to join a road.

Cross the road and slightly to your left join the Windrush Way continuing downhill along the right hand edge of the field through two gates then through another field straight on to a field gate in the right hand corner. Joining a track continue for 200m before turning sharp left. 6 Walk along the right hand edge of one field, cross a stile, and follow the fenced path between paddocks to a gate and a track.

Cross the track and continue ahead through a field gate with the field boundary now on your left, over a stile where the boundary swaps to your right and down over a stile to follow the track to a road.

Turn left along the road following it round past Hawling Lodge to a field gate on the bend on your right. Continue through the gate straight on to a gate, cross the stream and follow the path through two gates to a track by the entrance to Tally Ho House.

Leaving the Windrush Way turn left through a field gate 7 and walk down the path with the lake on your left to another field gate onto the road. Turn left along the road up to the T- junction where you turn right and follow the road for 1 mile (1.6km) into Guiting Power.
