Navigation

Almost opposite The Hare pub turn left into Church Road. Walk along the road past the church as far as the turn to Lyneham. Go through the gate on your left leading to allotments. Turn left and wind your way along a path through newly planted trees. Walk with the stream on your left.

When you reach the corner of the field 1 cross the footbridge and then go half right through a gate. Cross the next field towards Bruern Grange to reach a field gate by a garden wall. Continue up to a gate leading onto a lane.

Turn left along the lane and after approx. 150m you will see a bridleway sign Fifield 1 mile 2. Go diagonally left across the field to a gate. Turn right keeping close to the field hedge making towards a gate and footbridge. Cross the footbridge and walk straight ahead alongside a stream.

Where a bridge crosses the stream, turn left and go through the gate into the next field. Follow the line of the electricity poles to lead you diagonally up the field towards a gate. Go through into the playing field and keep to the left to reach the village of Fifield 3.

At this point you have the option of the extending the walk. See Route for optional extension.

Walk up the street ahead with the church on your right. At the T-junction go left and look out for a footpath almost opposite, ‘D’Arcy Dalton’ way. Follow the path between a fence and a hedge to a gate leading into a field.

Continue diagonally right across the field towards the far corner to a gap in the hedge. Turn left and follow the edge of the next field, looking out for a well-hidden stile on your left. Continue diagonally right across the next field to the far corner and the A424.

Cross the road carefully then bear diagonally left across the next two fields and then a further field before passing through a gate (rear of farmhouse) onto a lane 4. Turn left and follow the lane uphill past Tangley Farm Cottages to the main road.

Cross the road and almost immediately take the footpath on the right. Bear diagonally right across the next three fields through gaps in the hedges. At the far edge of the third field, pass through a gate across the next field to a field gate leading to the road.

Turn right and keep straight along the road past Springhill Farm to reach a crossroads 5 Turn left, (with a sheepwash on your left), pass Manor Farm on your right and carry on as far as Lower Farm House.

Turn right and follow the footpath straight ahead to a field gate and continue straight ahead the field to a bridge 6.

Over the bridge turn left and follow the stream along the edge of the next three fields.Half way along the third field turn left to cross the stream. Now follow the clear path ahead by some houses to Jubilee Lane. Follow the road to the High Street of Milton under Wychwood. Turn right to reach The Hare pub.

Route for optional extension

3 Turn right and follow the lane to reach the main road (A424). Cross and take the lane to the right of the Merrymouth Inn. Where the lane bears right by Fonthill Farm, continue straight ahead down the restricted byway. Follow this track to a locked gate leading onto Rissington airfield.

Turn left before the gate and follow the field hedge to the corner. Turn left, then right and continue along the edge of the next field. At the corner of the second field on the left, turn left and follow the track down to a gate. Continue straight ahead and cross the bridge.Shortly after crossing the stream, the bridleway bears right and climbs to a gate. Go straight ahead between two hedges; through a second gate onto a track.

Follow the track to Tangley Hall bearing left over the cattle grid to re-join the walk at 4.
