Landscape Archaeology – Unearthing the Past
Evening lecture with Sam Gorin
Thursday 25 February, 7-8.30pm
Sam Gorin explores a decade of excavations at Empingham, Rutland and examines how a major civil engineering project -- the construction of Rutland Water -- contributed to our understanding of landscape archaeology at a time before the introduction of developer funding and major archaeological units. Exploring evidence from prehistoric, Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon sites he will argue the case for continuity of occupation in the Gwash valley. Parallels will be made to Cotswold discoveries.
Sam taught A-level Archaeology at Newark and Sherwood College and held several roles, including Principal Moderator, for AQA for 35 years. With Jim Grant of Cirencester College he is co-author of a textbook, The Archaeology Coursebook, the 4th edition of which was published by Routledge in 2015.
