Three Churches and a River

Back to Guided Walks page

Three very different churches all in the Evenlode valley. One church has well preserved wall paintings, another has amazing family memorials and the third is the 12th Century church in Charlbury where the walk concludes. Good reasonably priced lunches can be ordered at The Bell before the walk.

The Evenlode is a very scenic wide valley with good views. The small church of All Saints at Shorthampton has some remarkable surviving medieval wall paintings. Spelsbury church, another All Saints, has several monuments to the Lee family of Ditchley Park. There is also a memorial to the Duke of Rochester who made the quote of Charles II "He never said foolish thing nor ever did a wise one". The path goes by Coldron Mill where a recently restored water wheel supplies power to the house. St Mary's Church in Charlbury dates in part from the 12th Century and has a notable Jacobean staircase.
