Phenomenology of Landscape: A study of Belas Knap Long Barrow

With Elizabeth Poraj Wilcynska
Phenomenology of landscape is the use of sensory experience to view and interpret an archaeological site. Landscapes are multimodal – information is received through multiple senses and processed simultaneously. Belas Knap long barrow was excavated in 1860 and 1929 and then restored by the ministry of works in 1930. Beyond basic geology and topography little has been recorded about the area around the site. This lecture will explore the results of a three-year sensory investigation at Belas Knap. Project themes include – perceptual mapping, acoustic archaeology, rock-art and lighting, art work produced in response to place.
Liz Poraj-Wilczynska is an artist and archaeographer who trained as an archaeological illustrator and has worked on archaeological sites throughout the county. In recent years she has broadened the scope of her work, overlaying archaeology with photography, painting, personal experience and social perspective. Liz investigates sense of place and presence using insights to interact with the ghost landscape of the past.
Cost: £5.50 or £5 to season ticket holders. All lectures are from 7 – 8.30pm (this includes time for questions). Finish times may vary. Booking is advisable. Tel: 01285655611
